    As part of the festivities for the Oscar Haynes Exhibit celebration, on March 15th, the Disciples of Christ Historical Society honored former DCHS staff member May Reed with a Lifetime Service Award for her contributions to our understanding of African American Disciples history.

    President Emeritus, Peter Morgan, shared the following tribute:

    "May Reed is a walking, talking treasure chest, who, for a lifetime, has enriched her church family with the stories of Black Disciples history.

    On Friday, March 15, the Disciples of Christ Historical Society hosted the launch of the Oscar Haynes Exhibit on African American Disciples History in its new home at Light of the World Christian Church in Indianapolis, IN. Oscar Haynes, for whom the exhibit is named, was the first layperson to be appointed as president of the National Convocation. Oscar's wife, Rev. Joan Bell-Haynes, was the evening's honored guest.

    Black History Month is both a celebration of Black history, in all its diversity and richness, and an annual reminder that, for far too long and in too many places, Black history has been marginalized, often viewed as little more than a footnote to someone else’s story. For us, as Disciples, it’s crucial to acknowledge that the narratives of Black Disciples have often been overlooked or marginalized in our histories of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the broader Stone-Campbell Movement. This is not a challenge unique to us.
