Born into a family of United Brethren and then becoming Evangelical United Brethren and still later United Methodist, I had very little knowledge of the Stone-Campbell Movement. For four years in the 1970s while my husband worked at The Upper Room,
I often passed this impressive Historical Society building and in the mid-eighties I worked briefly next door at the United Methodist Division of Higher Education & Ministries. But, I never took the time to venture inside!
My reaction was the same as the many guests I have greeted during my career here. WOW! People are always amazed to learn that every window is made of stained glass (even the bathroom windows). There are many history lessons to learn on just a tour of the windows.
In addition to the beautiful building the resources it holds are tremendous. I especially enjoy the opportunity to read the periodicals that arrive from all three streams of the Movement. All are given equal prominence in the reading room and are later bound and stored in the library for perpetuity.
This is my third time to move to Nashville and I am finding my employment at DCHS is one of the most rewarding places I have worked. While living on the 18th floor of a high-rise apartment building in downtown Nashville my husband and I enjoy the theater, sports, music venues, and great food offered within walking distance of our home.
