At the Library and Archives of the Historical Society we serve the information needs of anyone who is interested in the rich collections housed in the secure, climate-controlled environment of the Thomas W. Phillips Memorial building. Our patrons include congregational historians, ministers, scholars, authors, local historians, genealogists, and many other interested individuals.
Housed in the Phillips Memorial are the archives of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada, including records of the General Units and the Regions. The archives also holds 300,000 photographs and illustrations; the personal papers of more than 900 ministers, missionaries, scholars, and other individuals; and biographical files on more than 35,000 people. We also have records of over 23,000 congregations in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Christian Churches/Churches of Christ, and a cappella Churches of Christ. Also contained in the archives is information on the wide variety of organizations and programs of the three streams of the Stone-Campbell movement, including schools and universities, commissions, committees, conventions, conferences, church camps, children’s homes, and retirement residences.
The Library contains 37,000 books, 3000 periodical titles, and over 2500 pamphlets. Other significant collections in the library include sheet music, microfilm, and an extensive audio/visual collection.
We invite you to come visit us and let us provide information resources and support for your Sunday School class, retreat, or conference. We can help with any research project you are working on, including family or congregational history. You’ll find a wealth of material on any topic having to do with the Stone-Campbell tradition.
