Disciples of Christ Historical Society, in partnership with The Craddock Center, recently presented the Fred Craddock Award for Excellence in Preaching to Callie J. Smith. Smith is the first recipient of this award, which will be given annually, and is recognized for her outstanding skills in the pulpit.
The award was presented by Rev. Richard Spleth, regional minister of the Christian Church in Indiana, at a dinner co-hosted by the Historical Society and the Council on Christian Unity at the 2009 General Assembly in Indianapolis. Smith received a certificate, an engraved crystal award and $500.
Smith has served many congregations in Indiana, including her most recent position as Pastoral Associate at Greenfield Christian Church. She is the Program Director of the Office of Lifelong Theological Education at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis where she provides leadership for the Faith Learning Initiative and program support for Lifelong Education events.
Glenn Thomas Carson, president of the Historical Society said in announcing the award, “This is an opportunity for us to recognize younger ministers who are gifted in preaching. The proclamation of the Word is central to who we are as Disciples and Dr. Craddock hopes this award will encourage new ministers to give their very best in preaching.”
