Southern Christian Institute

Established in 1875 by the Disciples Home Missions division of the American Christian Missionary Society to educate freed slaves and their children, the South Christian Institute in Edwards, Mississippi educated young African Americans in vocational and ministerial skills until 1954.
Featured in this exhibit is a selection of photographs of the SCI Collection at the Historical Society. Here, students can be seen learning a vocation, participating in extracurricular activities and being a vital part of their community.
